Systems biology: just another word for ecology?

July 5, 2013

How are diverse networks established, and how do they evolve in response to different environments? These are highly relevant questions for investigators focused on the field of systems biology, but are also being tackled by Deborah Gordon of Stanford University in her work on the collective behavior of ant colonies.

In a fascinating talk at UCSF on June 27th as part of the Multicellularity Discussion Group, Gordon discussed her lab's work on analyzing how ant networks are established, regulated and evolve. Her work draws interesting analogies to other systems such as the brain, immune systems, and the internet.
