Center gives out special awards for quantitative approaches to students at Synopsys Science Fair

March 12, 2014

For the past two years, the Center has sponsored Special Awards at the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair (Synopsys) which highlight quantitative or interdisciplinary approaches to fundamental biological questions.

Four Center members (Kara Helmke, Krista McNally, Mao Taketani, and Lucas Tian) spent the day at the San Jose Convention Center judging hundreds of student projects, from grades 6 through 12, and interviewed their top candidates for the award. There were many amazing projects, including cutting edge bioinformatics and new DIY tools and software to help the health care industry and diagnosis. Congratulations to the 5 students who received awards, and special congratulations to our Grade 9-12 prize winner, Swetha Revanur, for advancing to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair!
